Frequently asked

Questions
What type of group can attend?

We welcome performance-oriented youth ensembles between the ages of 8 to 20 years. Ensembles will be placed in the "Junior" or "Senior" stream according to the information provided during registration. Music reading skills are definitely a must, because we rely on sheet music to communicate important details like ornaments, bowings, articulations, and dynamics.

Do we have to learn any music before arriving at Summit?

Learning the collaborative repertoire in advance is required, because we spend Summit weekend refining musical details, adding stylistic elements, learning choreography, and preparing for performance. Student ensembles need to arrive with all the collaborative tunes fully learned. But it's pretty easy: we provide all the sheet music as well as helpful recordings many weeks in advance.

What kind of activities does the weekend include?

Summit weekend is tons of fun! Students participate in break-out rehearsal groups where they learn choreography and work with coaches to finesse all the details in each tune, as well as attending mass ensemble rehearsals with over 100 fellow string players. Intermediate and Advanced players are also divided up to receive specialized coaching sessions. Other Summit events include public performances, social events such as a barn dance or karaoke, shared meals, and a fabulous final concert.

Can individuals sign up for Summit?

Unfortunately, no. Summit is intended for established youth ensembles who attend as a "team", rather than for individual players who do not already play with an ensemble.
