West Coast Youth Fiddle Summit

How It All Started

The West Coast Youth Fiddle Summit started way back in the fall of 2018. Nanaimo-based string teachers Trish and Geoff Horrocks had spent the summer teaching at fiddle camps. On their way home from one camp they talked about how wonderful it would be if their students in Nanaimo could benefit from meeting other like-minded youth, and learning from other fiddle ensemble directors.

After a few phone calls, the West Coast Youth Fiddle Summit was born!

It started with four groups: Fiddelium (Nanaimo BC), Yukon Fiddleheads (Whitehorse YT), North Shore Celtic Ensemble (Vancouver) and Coastline (Victoria). 52 fabulous youth spent a snowy weekend making music together under the guidance of five teachers.

Today the WCYFS has grown to bring over 100 youth musicians together, representing as many as seven ensembles each year.
